Every time I come back to Sierra Leone, more is missing. More beach, more sand, more waves – and unfortunately, also more hope and confidence that things will change someday. In this video, we take a first close look at the devastating sand mining that has been going on for over a decade. There are hardly any words to describe the shock. See for yourself how the country is literally eroding itself 24/7 while the government just watches. Alongside the waves, the coastline, houses, and forests are disappearing. Understandably, everyone involved tries to make as much money as possible to survive. The construction business is booming – even though the salty sand is actually unsuitable for building. But nobody seems to care. If you want to support the surf club, visit them, write to them, or maybe you even have an idea of what they can do? This year, surfing was officially recognized as a sport in Sierra Leone – a huge achievement! At the same time, there is a multi-million investment in the surf club at Bureh Beach. Crazy world. Get to know the surf club, especially Keke – the first and so far only consistent female surfer in Sierra Leone, who has been working on her dream of developing surfing in the country for 11 years. Sierra Leone’s waves, the surf club, the nature, and the country have been one of the most wonderful places in the world for me for years. But without waves, unfortunately, we lack the motivation to keep coming back.
