The Turnagain Arm tidal bore—or bore tide—is a long-lasting wave that surges down the narrow inlet just south of Anchorage, Alaska. It’s one of the few places in the world (and the only place in the United States) where this phenomenon occurs regularly, sometimes reaching heights of up to 6 to 10 feet. Because it's powered by the massive momentum of the entire ocean's tide rather than wind, the wave doesn't just break and disappear; it keeps rolling for 40 to 50 miles, taking about 5 hours to travel the full length of the inlet. The resulting wave is so powerful and consistent that local surfers, paddleboarders, and kayakers routinely ride a single, continuous wave for miles through the Alaskan wilderness.
